Nursing is not only a profession, but also a calling. Nurses play a pivotal role in healthcare and the community. The theme for National Nurses Week 2025 highlights the profound impact nurses have in shaping healthcare: “The Power of Nurses to Transform Health”.
History of the National Nurses Week
Efforts to establish a national recognition for nurses began in 1953 when Dorothy Sutherland (an official in the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare) proposed a “Nurse Day” to President Eisenhower, though it was not proclaimed. Over the years, various attempts followed, including a National Nurse Week in 1954 and resolutions in 1972 and 1974. The International Council of Nurses officially designated May 12—Florence Nightingale’s birthday—as International Nurse Day, and in 1974, President Nixon proclaimed a National Nurse Week.
By the 1980s and 1990s, these efforts culminated in formal recognition. The American Nurses Association (ANA) successfully advocated for May 6 as National Nurses Day in 1982, endorsed by President Reagan. In 1990, the ANA extended the celebration to a full week, and by 1993, May 6–12 became permanent. Later initiatives added National RN Recognition Day (1996) and National Student Nurses Day (1997), solidifying the annual observance.
Reason to Celebrate Nurses Week
Nurses Week is a special time when nursing organizations encourage gratitude and appreciation for nurses nationwide. Healthcare institutions host celebrations, and the public is urged to acknowledge nurses who have positively impacted their lives.
This week is an opportunity to spotlight the dedication of nurses. Instead of focusing on challenges, it’s a chance to celebrate the good in the profession. Take a moment to appreciate your nurse colleagues, mentors, and those who make a meaningful difference every day.

Ways to Honor Nurses During National Nurses Week
Self-Care
Nurses often experience high levels of stress, making self-care a vital aspect of their well-being. Encouraging healthy habits such as regular exercise, proper nutrition, and mental health support can help nurses maintain balance in their demanding roles. Supporters can contribute by offering resources, promotions, or simply ensuring nurses have the time and space to focus on their own health.
Recognition
Acknowledging nurses for their dedication can go a long way in boosting morale. Small gestures such as personal messages, thank-you notes, and even small gifts can show appreciation. Nurses can recognize their colleagues by expressing gratitude or nominating them for awards. Supporters can also share positive messages through social media, organize recognition events, or take a moment to personally thank the nurses in their lives.
Professional Development
Continuous learning is essential for nurses beyond required coursework. Investing in specialized certifications, leadership training, or pursuing advanced degrees allows nurses to expand their skills and knowledge. Supporters can encourage this by offering study time, helping with resources, or donating to educational programs that support nursing education.
Community Engagement
Nurses play a crucial role in advocacy and local health initiatives, often extending their impact beyond the bedside. They can get involved in healthcare discussions, leadership opportunities, and policy forums that address important issues in the field. Supporters can educate themselves about nursing contributions and attend relevant meetings or events to show their support for the profession’s continued growth.
Media Coverage
Media outlets can honor nurses by sharing stories highlighting their dedication, resilience, and impact on healthcare. News segments, interviews, and social media campaigns spotlight nurses’ contributions, while organizations publish articles and special features. Public tributes, videos, and awareness initiatives help recognize their invaluable role in patient care and community well-being.
Discounts, Special promotions, and Free services
Businesses can show appreciation and support by offering discounts, free services, and special promotions to show appreciation. They can sponsor local events, donate to nursing programs, or provide wellness packages. Public recognition through social media and in-store displays helps highlight nurses’ contributions, making them feel valued and celebrated.
